An electron microscope study of N-Nb2O5 is described. From a consideration of various intergrowths it is possible to assign specific contrast features in the lattice image to structural features, such as “extra” niobium atoms, within the crystal lattice. Although atomic positions are not resolved, their positions in the lattice image are revealed in this way. Thus, detailed analysis of defects and disorder within the crystals may be made.
