In cases where technical difficulties make it impossible to surround the treated volume on all sides by radium, a considerable degree of improvement in the dose distribution could be obtained by the use of non-uniformly loaded needles. This is illustrated by the following figures calculated for a typical single-plane implant. The active length of the radium needles in all the examples is 4 cm., and the dose is considered in a plane 0·5 cm. distant from the plane of the needles. A variation not exceeding ± 5 per cent. is taken as a criterion of substantial uniformity in dose.
