Persistent IR spectral holes in KI:ReO−4 and in RbI:ReO−4 crystals have been both modulated and erased with 10-MHz ultrasound. This mechanical modulation of the hole depth leads to a new phase-insensitive optical detector for ultrasonic waves in solids.
