After penicillin became available for the treatment of gonorrhoea it was nevertheless decided at the London Lock Hospital to continue to use the sulphonamides for the treatment of acute cases. The decision was made because the proportion of cures achieved by sulphonamide therapy still seemed adequate, and because the danger that penicillin might suppress the signs, or prolong the incubation period of early syphilis, could thus be avoided.
