This paper investigates the nonlinear roll motion of a flooded ship in waves using model experiments. It is found that roll response of a flooded ship can exhibit irregular and complicated behavior even in regular beam waves with moderate amplitude. Nonlinear analyses indicate that they can be chaotic. Nonlinearity in the restoring moment and dynamic effects of flooded water cause this complicated motion.
