Emission spectroscopy and laser interferometry are carried out to measure the temporal variations of particle densities of an SF 6 wall-stabilized arc in extinction. The rate of decrease of temperature deduced from these measurements is of the order of 10 8 Ks -1 . The electron number density falls exponentially with a time constant of 21 mu s. These measurements, when coupled with the F - ion number density determined from the continuum emitted by the arc, show that deviations from equilibrium composition are due only to the demixing effect.
