Sound absorption and dispersion near the critical point in a critical binary mixture are studied numerically within the framework of the Kawasaki mode-coupling theory. The critical absorption shows a marked decrease near the critical point, in contrast to the usual critical behavior. It is shown here that the existing mode-coupling approach breaks down over a wide range of frequencies and temperatures.
