The tectonics of salt‐dome formation has long been a subject for speculation on the part of petroleum geologists and pure geophysicists alike. To the former, the problem has been closely bound with that of locating the oil accumulations which frequently occur in proximity to salt domes. To the latter, it has provided a direct application for theories and experiments relating to the deformation of rocks in general. Conversely, in the development thus far of the various theories upon the mechanics of salt‐dome formation, full use has been made of the geologists' field‐data as well as the results of experiments in the geophysical laboratories.
