Rugged and sensitive chromatic solid-state materials are obtained by encapsulation of bichromic polydiacetylene-phospholipid liposomes appended with immunoglobulins in hybrid silica–siloxane sol–gel polymers. The resulting composites undergo dramatic and visible blue-to-red color transitions upon exposure to the corresponding antigens (see picture) and have applications as sensors.
