The authors present thermodynamic variational calculations for liquid simple metals using a fluid of hard spheres with repulsive Yukawa tails as a reference system. They show that the hard-sphere Yukawa reference fluid yields a lower variational upper bound to the free energy and improved pair correlation functions compared with the hard-sphere variational calculations.
