A reactive SnSn multiple bond system is found in distannane 1, as evidenced by the smooth reaction with tellurium to form the Sn2Te three-membered ring 2. Compound 1 is formed by thermolysis of the corresponding substituted cyclotristannane, which is prepared by a surprisingly simple, high-yield synthesis from an aryl Grignard reagent with tin(II) chloride. Aryl = 2,4,6-iPr3C6H2.
