The structure of an amorphous metal is assumed to consist of an arrangement of structural units which are generated from a basic unit by a coordination transformation. The parameters of the transformation matrix are distributed statistically. The basic unit is produced by energy relaxation of an assembly of dense random packed hard spheres and a dense arrangement of several icosahedral clusters of compressible spheres, respectively. The model provides realistic pair distribution functions. An interpretation of structural changes which occur during low‐temperature annealing and isothermal creep in amorphous substances is suggested.
