Silicon carbide present and future applications in photonics, energy and quantum technology

This perspective aims at providing a summary of the contributions at the research and industry forum held in Melbourne, Australia, in February 2025, entitled ‘Silicon carbide present and future applications in photonics, energy and quantum technology’. This forum brought together international leaders in various fields spanning the study, development and emerging applications related to the silicon carbide (SiC) material platform. We first present the aims of the forum, then contextualize some arising applications of SiC in the emerging areas of photonics, quantum technology and their intersection. Finally we summarize the key scientific and technological results from the Forum presentations and additional new advances occurred in the last year after the event, along with a discussion and outlook regarding synergies and opportunities for collaboration identified as a result of the event.
