SUMMARY The synthesis of pectin‐degrading enzymes in vitro by both Suillus luteus (L. ex Fr.) S. F. Gray, a proven ectomycorrhizal fungus, and Hebeloma oculatum Bruchet, a saprotrophic, non‐mycorrhizal species of a frequently ectomycorrhizal genus, is repressed by glucose. The possibility that a control mechanism, which is based on catabolite repression and which prevents extensive intracellular fungal infection, operates in ectomycorrhizas is discussed.
