Multifunctional agriculture is the rubric that defines a policy to reorient farming to be consistent with sustainable development. In essence, the European agricultural sector is to be liberalized with support and preferential tariff arrangements either removed or redirected towards environmental and social goals. Farmers are to be rewarded more by the market, with public intervention increasingly reserved for areas where public good issues are at stake. This transition marks a new direction for farm enterprises that are now forced to find new niches in which to operate. The wider environmental and social impacts of this transition remain to be determined.
