An electrostatic field induces a linear change in the intensity of light scattered by a gas in circularly polarized incident radiation. Differential scattering intensities for O, P, Q, R, S lines are evaluated for a linear dipolar molecule. The weak R(0) line shows a strong differential scattering. In the classical limit, differential scattering comes from molecules initially in the nonrotating J=0 state.
