Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) has been used since 1965 to study microfracture in polymers. This paper reports extensions of the EPR technique to study fracture in filled rubber systems below their glass temperatures, Tg. The interaction of temperature, strain rate, prestrain, and primary bond rupture was included in the investigation, and electron micrographs were used to correlate the various types of filler-matrix systems and their microscopic fracture characteristics with molecular bond rupture. Certain comparisons between the filled systems and earlier work on gum rubbers are also reported.
