The theory for the large acoustic polaron (soliton) in a one-dimensional lattice is extended to a general case with any interatomic (intermolecular) potential including both hardening and softening anharmonicities. The soliton solution is given by general expressions that allow us to calculate the binding energy and the effective mass of the polaron in any particular case. Our results show that the introduction of softening nonlinearity increases both the binding energy of the polaron and its effective mass.
