A semiempirical theory of solid solubility in metallic alloys is presented. The theory is based on Miedema's semiempirical expression for the heat of solution. Since atomic size mismatch effects are not included in Miedema's theory, and since they are crucial in substitutional solid alloys, a term is added to account for those effects. This term is derived from elastic continuum theory. A simple approximation is used for the entropy of mixing. The theory is applied to continuous solid solutions and to almost insoluble systems.
