We have found that 6,7-dihydroxy-4-sulfonatemethylcoumarin more favorably binds to boron than to coordinated zinc(II) in ZnII–dipicolylamine (DPA)-appended phenylboronic acid in water at neutral pH. By studying this novel property we have developed a fluorescence-based indicator displacement assay for the detection of phosphosugars in water.
