This review deals with recent results on free clusters of atoms in beams. Methods for cluster generation are referred and size distributions are discussed. Irregularities in mass spectra are explained by (i) "geometrically based magic numbers": Icosahedra, cubes and nutshells, for inert gases, ionic materials and semiconductors, respectively, and by (ii)"electronically based magic numbers": Molecular orbits (odd-even effect) and cluster electron shells, both in the case of simple metals. Additionally, Coulomb explosion of metal clusters is discussed.
