Fifty patients with inoperable bronchogenic carcinoma were treated with 1-(2-chloroethyl)-3 cyclohexyl-1 nitrosourea (CCNU) (NSC-79037). The overall response rate was 36%. The data indicated CCNU was effective against squamous cell carcinomas and adenocarcinomas, but further analysis revealed that the higher response rate to the drug was apparently related to better immunologic status of the patients, regardless of cell type. The toxicity of CCNU was generally mild with the dosage schedule of 130 mg/m2 every 6 weeks. It consisted of nausea, vomiting, leukopenia, and thrombocytopenia.
