The enhancement in sensitivity of infrared reflection spectroscopy to adsorbates on multilayer structures (MEIRAS) is analyzed by using classical Fresnel’s expressions for reflection and transmission of electromagnetic radiation and the results are compared to experimental MEIRAS spectra of CO adsorbed on Pt/SiO 2 /Au multilayer thin films. The analysis shows that the FTIR signal of adsorbed CO is significantly enhanced due to optical interference effects on the multilayer structures. The effect of different structural and optical parameters indicates that this sensitivity enhancement can be maximized by matching the interlayer thickness with the CO infrared absorption wavelength and the relative sensitivity to surface normal and tangential vibrational modes of adsorbates can be tuned. Practical considerations for designing a multilayer substrate and the potential application of MEIRAS technique in the study of adsorbates near metal−support boundary sites of model supported catalysts under reaction conditions are described.
