The plasma levels of individual amino acids, amino nitrogen, and ammonia were determined in prepsychotic alcoholics. Low taurine and high glutamic acid levels were the only abnormalities observed. A reduction of the plasma amino acid levels, previously reported, could thus not be confirmed. The possible significance of the elevated plasma glutamic acid level, which might reflect a deterioration of the cerebral metabolism, is discussed.
