Sodium (Na) and chloride (Cl) contents in twigs of 12 roadside coniferous and deciduous woody species were studied between early January and early May in 1972 and 1973. In most species, a gradual increase in Cl content during January and early February and a more rapid increase during March or early April was followed by a decline. The trend in Na content was essentially similar, but levels generally were lower than corresponding chloride values. Levels of Na and Cl were higher in buds than in adjacent twig tissues and, in the case of Salix alba ’Tristis’ Gaud (weeping golden willow), salt content decreased from apex to base of twigs. Salt content in twigs was related to the degree of plant injury, to differences in the physiological tolerance due to species, and also to the temperature and snowfall (precipitation) patterns during the sampling periods.
