In order to gain further insight into the fundamental mechanics of suspended‐material transport by turbulent flow in open channels, a detailed program of studies was undertaken involving the direct measurement of eddy‐diffusion coefficients and suspended‐material concentrations. This paper outlines the important results of this study, and presents some typical data obtained. The measurements were made In two channels, one being 0.94 foot and the other 2.25 feet in width. For several slopes and water‐depths in each channel, data were obtained on the distribution of mean velocity, diffusion‐coefficients, and variation of sediment‐concentration. The actual sediment‐distributions were then compared with the theoretical distributions as calculated from the diffusion‐coefficients. It appears that the diffusion‐coefficients as measured directly by the method developed in these studies give an accurate indication of the mass‐transfer characteristics of the turbulence.
