Smart structures have demonstrated a broad range of potential applications for performance enhancement for the aerospace industry. This paper focuses on applications of smart structures to aircraft. Four major areas are considered including (1) vibration/acoustic control, (2) shape control, (3) multi-functional smart structures, and (4) morphing aircraft. Several research/application projects conducted by government agencies, aerospace industries, and universities addressing numerous target applications such as flutter suppression, tail buffet control, acoustic control, adaptive micro air vehicle, the smart wing, and smart skin are reviewed.
