Ring contraction is observed during nucleophilic displacement reactions of 5‐hydroxy‐2‐methyl‐1,3‐dioxanes. Evidence is put forward that the mechanism of this contraction is not similar to that of the concerted ring contractions known for analogous pyrane‐ and/or 1,3‐dithiane systems. A reaction path concordant with experimental facts is advanced.
