Bacillus thuringiensis Berl. showed an obvious effect in reducing the larval population of the cotton leafworm Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) in cotton cultivations when sprayed as “Dipel” at the rate of 500 g/feddan. The egg masses of S. littoralis as well as Aphis gossypii individuals however were not affected. The population curve of the main predators prevailing in the experimental area showed to be slightly affected as a result of spraying with B. th., but in varying degrees. This effect may be correlated to the reduction in the population of the main host prey or the low rate of food consumption caused by B. th. when consumed with the host. The predator population, being affected can rebuild in association with the rebuild of the host prey and low persistence of B. th. in the field. It appears that B. th. can be safely recommended for the control of S. littoralis with no obvious harmful effects on its predators.
