A method is described that considerably reduces the time involved in preparing combustion-derived CO2 samples for isotope ratio mass spectrometry. The combustion of organic material is performed in small quartz or pyrex bombs that can be inserted into evacuated serological tubes and broken to release the combustion gases. Cryogenic purification of the CO2 was performed by a microprocessor-controlled system originally designed for breath CO2 analysis. The method has been validated with a variety of NBS standards and 13C-enriched organic compounds.
