An NMR microscope with an operating frequency of 500 MHz has been constructed. Using this instrument images showing cellular detail in plant systems have been generated. These have a best in-plane resolution of 4.5 pm and a slice thickness of 100 pm. Many features of these images can be interpreted as the effects of local magnetic susceptibility differences inside the sample.
