A study has been made of proton migration in an anodic aluminum oxide film during cathodic polarization in 1 M hydrochloric acid solution at 30°C. The charge transported by proton migration in the oxide film during the polarization was quantitatively determined using time-of-flight-elastic recoil detection analysis. An exponential increase in ionic current with increasing cathodic potential indicated that proton conduction within the barrier-type anodic oxide film follows the high field conduction model. The corresponding parameters were also determined.
