The lattice static Green's function method is used in order to calculate the lattice distortion and strain energy owing to an oxygen impurity in vanadium and to hydrogen in niobium, tantalum, and vanadium. Effective impurity–host atom interatomic potentials are obtained from internal friction and volume expansion data. The nearly zero value of the shape factor to the trace of the dipole tensor ratio deduced for hydrogen determines the calculated distortion to be quite different from those produced by oxygen and nitrogen. The activation energies for the migration of the interstitials are calculated by using the Savino and Tewary model based upon the Flynn and Stoneham theory of light interstitial migration. A reasonable agreement with the experimental results is obtained.
