A theoretical description of the density wave ordered phases induced by a magnetic field in quasi-1D conductors is given in the weak-coupling limit. Within each phase, labelled by a quantum number, the wave-vector is quantised. Density wave ordering and orbital quantisation open an infinite series of gaps in the quasi-particle spectrum. The specific heat jump at the metal-density-wave critical line, the behaviour of the electronic gaps and of the order parameter, and the first-order transitions between different density wave phases are studied. Departures from BCS theory are discussed. Relations with experiments on Bechgaard salts are examined.
