A common observation is that a period of slow growth follows the transplant of deciduous nursery stock. The reduced growth is characterized as transplant shock Once vigorous growth resumes, the plant is considered to be established or recovered from transplant shock. The time between transplant and resumption of vigorous growth is termed the establishment period. Physiological processes during this period have not been adequately studied and a workable definition of when establishment occurs has not been made.
