A convenient method for the determination of the site of the double bond in long-chain olefinic acids has been developed. The technique consists in cyclizing the acid with o-aminophenol to a 2-alkenylbenzoxazole and determining the 70 eV spectra of the resulting heterocycle. Advantages of the method are (1) easy preparation of the derivatives, (2) clear, reproducible diagnostic ions and (3) extension to the analysis of di-, tri- and polyenoic acids.
