The genus Torquigener Whitley is redescribed and includes 12 Australian species: T. whitleyi (Paradice), T. paxtoni n. sp., T. pallimaculatus n. sp., T. parcuspinus n. sp., T. hicksi n. sp., T. tuberculiferus (Ogilby), T. perlevis (Ogilby), T. altipinnis (Ogilby), T. squamicauda (Ogilby), T. pleurogramma (Regan), T. vicinus Whitley, and T. andersorzae n. sp. T. vicinus is elevated to full specific rank from its original description as T. tuberculiferus vicinus . On the basis of morphological and osteological characters, new genera, Tetractenos and Polyspina , are proposed for Tetrodon glaber Freminville and Tetraodon hamiltoni Gray & Richardson, and Torquigener piosae Whitley, respectively. A preliminary key to Australian tetraodontid genera is included, plus keys to Torquigener and Tetractenos species. Detailed bibliographies are given for each species.
