A positive correlation between extent of geographic range and magnitude of chromosomal evolution was found in the rodent genera Peromyscus and Onychomys. It is postulated that the size of geographic range is positively correlated with the success of a species. These data can be interpreted as indicating that chromosomal evolution should be included among the genetic variables that may have adaptive value to a species.
