Field emission studies on both the polar surfaces of ZnO of about 3.3 Ωcm in bulk resistivity, showed a work function of 3.9 and 5.0 eV for the (0001) and (0001) oriented tips, respectively. Surface states on the (0001) oriented tips, were calculated from a “plateau” behaviour of the corresponding Fowler-Nordheim plot, to be situated at about 50 mV below the conduction band edge with a density of 6.5 × 1013 cm−2.
