The new bilge waste collection and treatment system, which serves as the collector, transporter and gravity separator for ship's bilge waste, has been shown to be a suitable medium for the application of chemical demulsification techniques. Chemical demulsification methods are especially suitable for emulsified oily wastes which are reluctant to separate into their constituent phases. Certain quatenary ammonium compounds have been shown to be highly effective demulsifiers over a wide range of concentration and temperature in a series of laboratory tests. The demulsifiers were also found to be relatively insensitive to the type of oily waste and also performed well in the presence of particulate matter. A field demonstration of the demulsifiers supported the laboratory tests.
