This article investigates some design considerations of fault-tolerant permanent magnet vernier (PMV) machines. The key of this article is to provide a holistic approach to analyze and design fault-tolerant permanent magnet vernier machines. The electromagnetic performance, including torque density, fault-tolerant capability, and power factor are taken into consideration by using air gap permeance and magnetic equivalent circuit models. Hence, the proper slot-pole combination and structure parameter of the fault-tolerant PMV machine can be selected. Then, the finite-element models of the typical machines are established to verify these analyses. Finally, the experiments on a prototype machine are conducted, verifying the effectiveness of theoretical analyses.
