Calculations are made of the double-differential cross section for incoherent neutron scattering from a hydrogen atom involved in a chemical bond. Processes are investigated which correspond to the excitation of successive vibrational states of the bound hydrogen atom leading eventually to a dissociation of the bond. Two examples are considered: a hydrogen atom involved in an O---H bond and in an O---H...O hydrogen bond such as in water. Experimental evidence for the latter case is also shown.
