This paper presents a quantitative comparative study on the two novel memory machines (MMs) with two sets of different magnets on the stator, which are derived from the switched flux (SF) and the variable reluctance (VR) topologies, respectively. The machine topologies, the operating principles, and the design considerations are described. The hybrid magnet sizing is analytically optimized with the aid from a simplified magnetic circuit. Then, the major parametric optimization is conducted on the two machines sharing identical outer diameter and stack length, as well as the copper loss constraint. The electromagnetic performance of the two optimally designed models is analyzed and comprehensively compared, which confirms the advantage of the SF topology for MMs.
