Ionized filaments of temperature 1 K and density contrast 10:1 are formed by thermal instability in a low-density optically thin medium which cools radiatively from an initial temperature 10 K. Typical scale lengths are 0.1/n PC. The outlying filaments of the Gum Nebula may result from this mechanism.
