SYNOPSIS. Responses of wild type and mutant strains of Chlamydomonas reinhardi were studied in a simple but stable chemostat. No chlorosis was observed under conditions of phosphate, arginine or Na acetate limitation. Competition between wild type and the mutant strain y‐2 was studied in continuous culture with phosphate as the limiting nutrient in continuous light, continuous dark and alternating periods of light and darkness. In all cases, the mutant strain y‐2 overgrew the wild type.
