When compared with other kinetic data, the time dependence of the emission of NO2 in shock waves at ∼2000°K supports the conclusion that the intensity follows [NO2] in this system. Study of the emission from the system of CH3NO2–Ar shows that NO2 appears following the shock, but that it has a very short lifetime, presumably reacting according to CH3+NO2→CH3O+NO.
