The hydration of ethylene over various solid acids such as NiSO4, CuSO4, MnSO4, CaSO4, Cr2(SO4)3, Fe2(SO4)3, Al2(SO4)3, ZnS, NiO, SiO2-Al2O3, SiO2-MgO and solid phosphoric acid was investigated at 190∼220°C in order to examine the correlation between their acidic property and catalytic activity or selectivity. The sulfates of Ni, Fe(III), and Al showed high catalytic activity and selectivity in comparison with solid phosphoric acid and SiO2-Al2O3. The catalysts whose acid strength in their dried states was as strong as -8.2
