When either technical malathion or naled plus undiluted protein hydrolysate (PIB-7) was applied to guava foliage to control the oriental fruit fly, Dacus dorsalis Hendel ; the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann); and the melon fly, D. Cucurbitae Coquillett, naled caused more immediate mortality, but malathion had greater residual effectiveness. Also, the effectiveness of malathion was directly proportional to the ratio of the concentration of toxicant to PIB-7 (1:4>1:16>1:64>1:256>1:1230>1:2460) when the amount of formulation applied was the same. About the same results were obtained when native and laboratory-reared (sterile) flies had free access to the exposed baits as when known numbers of laboratory-reared flies were confined in cages over the baits.
