The present paper discusses approximate solutions of the well‐known balance equations for the kinetic electron processes occurring in thermoluminescence and thermally stimulated conductivity. Four cases are considered: in the first two cases the electron and hole retrapping rates are either both large or both small; the third and fourth cases involve one of these rates being large and the other small. The well known formulae for thermoluminescence due to Randall and Wilkins, and Garlick and Gibson are derived as special cases using certain simplifications.
