Isostructural ferromagnetic and ferroelectric perovskites like manganites (La,A)MnO3 and titanates Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 are favourable candidates for layered film structures with large magnetoelectric coupling phenomena. Manganites (La,A)MnO3 have already been intensively investigated: conduction electrons have a high degree of spin polarization and are strongly coupled to lattice degrees of freedom, making electric transport sensitive to lattice distortions. Epitaxial film systems of manganites and titanates have been prepared by off‐axis pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Field effect devices of La1–x Ax MnO3 (A = Sr; Ca; Ce) and PbZr0.52Ti0.48O3 (PZT) show channel resistance modulation from both, (i) the electric field effect at the PZT‐manganite interface and (ii) the biaxial strain induced by the inverse piezoeffect of PZT. Piezoelectric substrates have been employed to dynamically control the in‐plane strain state of manganite films, revealing strain‐dependent variation of the ferromagnetic Curie temperature and the resistance.
